It looks like there's going to be big changes for me at work. My degree is in computer systems engineering, and I was hired on a few years back as a training developer. My old manager let me work on skunk work side coding projects, one of which I just got a patent for. But work has changed since then, I manage more and more courses and have less time for real engineering work. At my last salary review my manager said I should move into a more technical position, so I'm interviewing with the software tools group. I know more about the company's test systems than they do, but I have no experience with the software development tools that they all use, so this will be interesting. I'll have to do more work, but hopefully it will be work I actually enjoy.
I got to dig up some of my old projects to show them that I can code, including my old fractal generating software. One of my favorite bits of code was being able to have the program render a fractal, drag a box on that image, then render the zoomed in contents of the box. Here's a few of the outputs from the program, suitable for desktop wallpaper.
I had versions of these posted before, but my old image host crapped out. The math details are here. Lemme know if anyone wants a higher res version of any of these.Current Music: Bjork - Wanderlust

I discovered an artist on the interweb a while back who does some incredible wood sculpture. I suggest you check him out - www.chrisyates.net.
One of his products is wooden puzzles called bafflers, and I've picked up a bunch. I was prompted to take a picture of the collection, and here it is:
Oh man, so much fun.

I'm racing this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta, and I'm really nervous. This will be the first time I've raced in the singles event, I've done it a bunch of times in a four and eight. I've been trying to get a singles event entry for three years now and I finally got accepted, but I haven't been able to get into good racing shape this year. It seems every time I get a good steam going, I get sick and have to restart from scratch. I'll be starting number 32 of 49 in my event. If I can finish within 10% of the top time, I'm guaranteed an entry next year, which is my goal. Here's hoping I don't embarrass myself.

I dinged 60 on my Lock alt this weekend. This is my second 60, my first is a rogue (a very common combination it seems). I joined a guildie for UD Strat and we pugged the rest of the group. We got lucky and ended up with three epic'd out players doing a rep run who just tore through the place, and I ended up witha few nice drops as well.

This is from a few weeks ago out in felwood when I was 52. I enslaved a 54 demon and the spell bugged, so I had a permanently enslaved hellcaller. This lasted for a good two hours until a 56 priest and 58 hunter decided to end my fun. Has anyone else had enslave demon bug like this, or know how to reproduce it?

Hehe, an older pic on my rogue main. I've upgraded to Vis'Kag and Brutality since then. I win teh dps!

As of saturday we have a new puppy. We're calling him Scout for the time being. We got him as a hand me down from a friend of a friend who developed an allergy to the dog's saliva. The photos don't do him justice, he's a lot cuter in person. He's six months old and about 4 pounds, and will grow to about 5-6 pounds. The cats are still adjusting.

There's all sorts of grown up stuff going on in my life right now. Tara and I are now car owners (and parking space owners). We got a Honda Civic Hybrid, and I'll be using it to commute this fall when my job moves from downtown Boston (5 minute walk from apartment) to North Reading.
We're also having our kitchen remodeled, and the demolition started this morning. For the next few weeks food will come from the microwave, hello ramen! Yesterday was spent emptying the kitchen and moving the fish tank. Moving a 90 gallon tank is no fun. We drained it down to about 30G, and I lifted up the ends while Tara put plastic sliders underneath, then I dragged it to the other side of the apartment (30G*8.33lb + 120lb rocks + 200lb tank + 80lb stand = 650lb). I am very sore today... |

When I started working for Teradyne, I took on a side project and ended up solving a problem in an interesting and improved way. The company decided to patent my algorithms and GUI in 2002, and filed all the paperwork. The company then hit a downturn, and my patents were cut because they aren't money makers. I thought that would be the end of the story. So the patent lawyer stops me in the cafeteria at lunch, and apparently my patents will go through after a final revision. Woot!
Basically the invention pertains to mixed signal device testing (microchips with both analog and digital signals). I developed a way to set up the analog and digital portions of the test system that maintains the coherency of the signals within the constraints of the system. patent one and patent two |

I was planning on posting these a long time ago, but better late than never. Holiday photos behind the cut. ( Read more... ) |

A long lost friend (Brandon) contacted me through LJ today. I still remember walking up to him on the street and asking if he wanted to be friends (I think I was four at the time). He was my best friend until his family relocated to Ireland, and we never reconnected when he got back.
So here's a photo for nostalgia's sake. I'm the one dressed like Link, Brandon is in black face paint. Dominic, on the right is getting married this fall, and Dillon in the mask I haven't been able to track down.

So I finally hit level 60 with my main World of Warcraft character last night. That makes me the third in the guild to hit 60, and Mike will probably be the fourth. We have two endgame rogues in the guild, my character (Piolia), and Ryan's (Shadowblend), which kind of sucks because we'll be competing for the same rare items.

So I'm back to the grind with work and school. I'm taking Stochastic Processes this semester, which is concerned with modeling random processes and incorporating them into engineering system models. (I know, it sounds like a hoot!) I'm a little worried because one student who has completed their doctorate is retaking the class as a refresher and said it was the most demanding class they'd taken :(. The professor says to expect 10-12 hours of homework a week. Ouch, my Warcraft!
We were buried in wet snow yesterday in Boston, and my legs are killing me from slogging to/from work/class. There are so many muscles used when you are trying to both walk quickly and not fall on your ass.
Today is Tara and my four year anniversary, wow, so fast! I'm thinking nice dinner and flowers, and maybe a movie.
And how about some random doodles. The first is from my undergrad years, the other two are from 8th grade methinks...

Ok, now I'm really done. I had my Error Control Codes final today, and I feel good about three of the four questions. Hopefully I'll stay in the A range. Now I can promptly forget it all! It was actually a really interesting course, and I'll probably take a few more courses in the field.
I'll be off to San Jose, CA on the 21st for christmas with my grandma and sisters and back to Boston on the 28th. Happy holidays everyone ;) |

I'm done! I've been in a nightmare crunch for the last 2.5 months for work, and as of today, it's over! I had to develop and deliver three separate engineering training classes, and I finished the final presentation today. I've worked sundays for the last seven weeks, now i've got seven extra vacation days coming my way (and no deadlines). I think a few four day weekends are in order ;)Current Music: Basement Jaxx - Cish Cash
